Puppeteers and figure theatre artists define themselves aesthetically primarily through productions for adult audiences, apart from those puppet and figure theatres that actually perform exclusively for children. At the same time, however, puppet and figure theatres in Germany produce and perform an average of three-quarters of their productions for children. A closer look reveals that there is clearly artistic potential for development in puppet and figure theatre in an affirmative rediscovery of child audiences and a clear commitment to children as competent spectators. It therefore seems timely to dedicate a double theme section to figure, puppet and object theatre for young audiences.
