Zu seinen Buchpublikationen gehören Presence and Resistance: Postmodernism and Cultural Politics in Contemporary American Performance (Ann Arbor/Michigan 1992), From Acting to Performance: Essays in Modernism and Postmodernism (New York/London 1997) und Liveness: Performance in a Mediatized Culture (New York/London 1999). Für Liveness wurde er mit dem renommierten Callaway Prize for the Best Book in Theatre or Drama ausgezeichnet. Derzeit arbeitet er an einem Buchprojekt zu All the Young Dudes: Performing Glam Rock.
