The conquest of space

IIn my work, in which the significance of the space only arises through its conquest, we have the credo L’éspace est la conquête de l’éspace (the space is the conquest of the space). Complicity with the director is all-important in this. And Luk is a great accomplice when it comes to conquering space.
With his experience as a director and midfielder in football he recognises the opportunities, the spaces within the space. He has an overview and an instinct for “distribution of the ball”. As he sounds it out, he is everywhere at once. In front of, on, behind the stage. He constantly changes position and perspective, looking at what is developing on stage from within, outside, front, back.
Like a kind of ferryman he takes the actors through the space, revealing ways in which they can move within it, how far they can go. He gives the impetus, and the actors investigate further. But he also shows them ways of going against the grain of the space. He makes them see where the space gives them energy. And that – as seen in the recent staging of “Black” – they are strongest when they engage thoroughly with the elements...
